07. Inside my apartment at the Tolstoy House
In response to popular request a few weeks ago, here are a few pictures of the interior of my apartment. This is a "western style" apartment so it's very similar to what you would see in the United States, albeit in a historic, 107-year-old building. The entrance is a massive old door that opens into a long hallway, leading to a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and two half-bathrooms. It came fully furnished, including some great antiques and a few Soviet-era knickknacks. All my windows are on the south wall and they face a courtyard exterior to the Tolstoy House but bounded on the south by another apartment building. So, there is no street noise. Of particular note: the ceilings are all about 12 feet high. Perhaps the exact dimension is 5 arshin (Russia did not formally adopt the metric system until 1924, 14 years after this building was constructed). The sofa in the living room includes a fold-out bed, so any family and friends who visit St. Petersburg and want a free place to stay, well, here it is! Another fun fact about Tolstoy House: this guy lived in the building until his recent death in 2012. As far as I know, he did not reside in my specific apartment...
