18. The Bronze Horseman
Perhaps the most well-known monument in a city full of them is The Bronze Horseman statue. Located along the Neva River roughly in between St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Winter Palace in the middle of Senate Square, it's a monument to the founder of the city, Tsar Peter the Great. It was commissioned by Catherine the Great, designed by the French sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet, and unveiled in 1782. The stone pedestal upon which the statue stands is apparently noteworthy for its considerable size and the effort it took in the 1770s to move it from its place of origin in Finland.
