85. Back from vacation
In case you're following this blog in real time but missed my last post from earlier in the month, I have been offline for a couple of weeks because my wife was here for a visit. We had a wonderful time together, and obviously my efforts to document my year in St. Petersburg via this blog didn't make the priority list while she was here.
We did not spend all of our time sightseeing, but we did manage to see most of the highlights of St. Petersburg: the Hermitage Winter Palace and the Hermitage General Staff building, the State Russian Museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Bronze Horseman, and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. We also visited the Kunstkamera, Russian Levsha Museum, Field of Mars, and the Summer Garden. We ate at many of the restaurants up and down Nevsky Prospekt and tried a bunch of delicious Russian food as well as Georgian and Azerbaijani cuisine.
We explored a variety of other places in the city that were new to both of us, but no less spectacular. You'll hear about all of these museums, palaces, fortresses, churches, and theaters in future posts.
Finally, we also went further afield and visited two nearby countries. If you look at a map or are otherwise familiar with this part of the world, I bet you can guess which countries. You'll be hearing all about our travels in two series of blog posts coming soon.
All in all, it was a great couple of weeks and we made countless new memories. It was gone too fast but we have our next visit to look forward to at the end of the year, when I return to the United States for an extended holiday vacation.
