86. St. Petersburg Harley Days

I have never been especially interested in motorcycles, and generally consider them to be relatively unsafe and annoyingly loud. However, I do appreciate a cool bike when I see one. On a recent weekend, a Harley festival took over Ostrovsky Square near my apartment (the site of the PetroJazz festival the previous month). It was easy to visit on my way to or from the Metro station on Nevsky Prospekt, so I stopped by on two different days for brief looks around while I was killing time waiting for my wife to arrive in Russia.

The beautiful weather brought out plenty of locals and curious tourists, and Harley clubs (gangs? organizations? - not sure what they prefer to be called these days) were in attendance from around Russia as well as Estonia and Finland.

The highlight of the festival was the gallery of custom Harleys. There was also an arena set up for trick riding demonstrations, a variety of food and merchandise vendors, a music stage featuring a bunch of rock and blues bands, and a DJ who kept the dance floor packed with a strange assortment of people (I've been told that Russians love to dance). This event was considerably larger and more interesting than a similar motorcycle festival held the previous weekend at Manege Square.
